PAYA RUMPUT(19 June 2010) - On the night Terengganu were crowned the overall champions of the Sukan Malaysia for two editions in a row, swimmer Chan Kah Yan and runner J. Karthik were chosen as the best sportswoman and sportsman at this year’s games.

Kah Yan of Wilayah Persekutuan emerged as the top woman athlete at this year’s games when she won seven gold medals in the 100m freestyle, the 4x100m medley, 200m freestyle, 200m backstroke, 200m individual medley, 800m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 4x100m freestyle and 50m backstroke

.She broke the games record in the 100m freestyle as well as in the 4x100m medley.

In the meantime, runner Karthik of Melaka was selected as the best sportsman following his three gold medal wins in the 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000metres and also 10,000 metres.

Karthik broke the games record in the 3,000m steeplechase. After ten days of gruelling competition, Terengganu proved that their win of the overall title two years ago when they were hosts in 2008 were no fluke by winning this year’s game in commanding fashion - bagging the all-important men’s football gold medal last night to make it a hat-trick of football crowns.

Juara keseluruhan kontinjen dari Terengganu.

And while they might not be anywhere near the 61 gold medals they raked up two years ago at home, still the 47 gold, 30 silver and 43 bronzes spoke volume of their rising profile as a bastion of producing Malaysian athletes.

Winning 12 gold medals in canoeing, eight in cycling, six in athletics and five each in judo, pencak silat and weightlifting paved the way for Terengganu’s victory as Selangor sneaked up ahead of Wilayah Persekutuan for the second spot right on the final day today.

Selangor, the seven times winner of the Sukan Malaysia, had harboured ambition of grabbing their eighth Sukan Malaysia crown and while they were playing catch-up for much of the days, they at least managed to pull one over Wilayah Persekutuan.

Both Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan completed this year’s meet on the same number of gold medals - 43 - but Selangor had won just one more silver with 43 as compared to Wilayah’s 42 which saw them finishing better at the standings.

Hosts Melaka, who had been leading the standings for the first few days of the games, finally settled for seventh - with women’s beach volleyball contributing the last gold medal.

They ended this year’s meet on 32 gold medals, 31 silver and 28 bronzes. With just six gold medals on offer today, it did not affect the overall standings with Perak picking up two gold medals through petanque, Selangor in men’s beach volleyball, Negeri Sembilan in squash, Pulau Pinang also in squash and Melaka in women’s beach volleyball.

All in all, the Sukan Malaysia 2010 has seen some great performances with ten national records being broken alongside the 94 games record which were shattered.

At the end of the day, that is the whole point of organising this multi-sports tournament - so that our young athletes will have the chance to gauge where they stand and where they need to go from where they are.
